5 steps to get driving

Becoming a rideshare driver in New Zealand can seem like a hard, but with a little bit of preparation, it can be a relatively easy process.

There are several requirements you need to meet in order to become a rideshare driver:

Personal Requirements

  • you are at least 20 years old
  • you hold a valid full New Zealand Licence
  • you hold a valid Passenger-endorsement
  • you hold a Small Passenger Vehicle Licence or a Label under your Company i.e. Uber
  • you have a valid vehicle
  • you have a Certificate of Fitness for that vehicle
  • you have a logbook
  • you have commercial insurance

Car requirements

  • has at least 4 doors
  • has a model year that is 15 years old or newer
  • is in good driving condition with no cosmetic damage
  • is registered with a valid WOF

(other minimum rules may apply to specific vehicle options for a given company)

Step 1: Passenger Endorsement from NZTA

What is it?

NZTA checks the background of anyone applying for an endorsement to carry passengers, including criminal history, traffic offences, and medical health.

Step 2: Small Passenger Service Licence (SPSL)

What is it?

A licence required to carry passengers for reward/payment. You may be able to operate under a companies licence i.e. Uber and request a SPSL label under there licence

OR

  • request a SPS label under your company i.e. Uber

Step 3: Certificate of Fitness (CoF)

What is it?

A CoF is a regular check to ensure that your vehicle meets required safety standards

  • apply at an NZTA agent i.e. VTNZ, AA or VINZ

Step 4: Logbook

What is it?

If you are a commercial driver, you need to fill in and NZTA approved logbook. Logbooks provide a record of your work activity and enable enforcement officers to check compliance with the work-time rules.

Step 5: Commercial car insurance

What is it?

All vehicles driven for work purposes require commercial insurance

  • As a company employer you are required to organise commercial insurance to cover your employees
  • Rideshare companies do not cover their drivers so drivers are required to take out their own policy
  • You need to be listed on the car's insurance policy even it you are not the main owner or policy holder
